The SmartWig

Sony was in the smartwatch vanguard, but watches, as we all know, are a niche item when compared to at least one common accessory: hair.

Eager to push into this new frontier, the company is attempting to patent an item it calls the “SmartWig,” a full wig or toupee that would connect to a smartphone or other device and let users do something as basic as receive an email notification or as complex as ask a friend for directions, send picture or video footage to them for reference, and then receive subtle vibrational feedback that would tell them where to go.

At first, I admit I scoffed at this idea as being, well, niche to day the least.

Then it occurred to me there is at least one niche where this actually could be extremely useful – acting. Actors use wigs far more frequently than most people realize, and not only could this be used for video footage, but prompts for lines and other uses also suggest themselves.

About

I design video games for a living, write fiction, political theory and poetry for personal amusement, and train regularly in Western European 16th century swordwork. On frequent occasion I have been known to hunt for and explore abandoned graveyards, train tunnels and other interesting places wherever I may find them, but there is absolutely no truth to the rumor that I am preparing to set off a zombie apocalypse. Nothing that will stand up in court, at least. I use paranthesis with distressing frequency, have a deep passion for history, anthropology and sociological theory, and really, really, really hate mayonnaise. But I wash my hands after the writing. Promise.
