Oyster Herpes Virus Spread by Plankton

Plankton may be spreading a herpes-like virus that has been devastating Pacific oyster farms across the world.

Since 2008, POMS, caused by the ostreid herpesvirus (OsHV-1), has been killing Pacific oysters in countries ranging from France, and the UK to Spain and the US.

[Veterinary scientist Dr. Richard Whittington of the University of Sydney] says under some conditions, plankton can transfer tens of kilometres with oceanic currents.

It’s a little sad to realize that even oysters are subject to the Herpes virus.

I would suggest that they might benefit from a safe sex campaign, but plankton as a vector seems like the oyster equivalent of an airborne Ebola Zaire with comparable mortality rates.

About

I design video games for a living, write fiction, political theory and poetry for personal amusement, and train regularly in Western European 16th century swordwork. On frequent occasion I have been known to hunt for and explore abandoned graveyards, train tunnels and other interesting places wherever I may find them, but there is absolutely no truth to the rumor that I am preparing to set off a zombie apocalypse. Nothing that will stand up in court, at least. I use paranthesis with distressing frequency, have a deep passion for history, anthropology and sociological theory, and really, really, really hate mayonnaise. But I wash my hands after the writing. Promise.
