Infectious Disease Stress Ball

stress

Inside each ball is liquid latex which makes the magic happen when you squeeze it. Be careful you don’t pierce the ball with your fingernails or any other sharp object lest you be left with a puddle of neon colored goo.

Staphylococcus comes from the Greek words “staphyle” and “kokkos” meaning “a bunch of grapes”. If you squeeze our Infectious Disease Stress Balls, you’ll get a very nasty cluster of pustules, much like a bunch of grapes. Grapes full of orange pus.

This is strangely mesmerizing…

Available from Think Geek. Pretty cheap, too.

British Airways’ Baby-Carrying Skycot in the 1950s

For babies travelling on its long-distance services, BOAC [a predecessor of today’s British Airways] provided hammock-type “skycots”.

These allowed the infant plenty of room for movement, but prevented him or her from falling out. Suitable for those up to a year or so old, these cots were clamped securely to the luggage rack, allowing the infant (and no doubt its parents) to sleep in safety and comfort.

For take-off and landing, though, the child had to be held by one of its parents; a practice which continues today.

Seems the right time to pipe up with a joke about not putting oversized items in the overhead storage compartments…

Football Sized Tumor Removed from Girl’s Face

Huge-tumour-in-mouth-403743

Grace, 17, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, faced eventual suffocation and had hidden herself from the outside world due to her appearance.

Her local hospital was unable to help her but her case was taken up by a Christian pastor who got her aboard a floating hospital called the Africa Mercy.

The ship is part of a group called the Mercy Ships which travel around the world performing medical procedures for those who are too poor or isolated to receive adequate treatment.

The four-hour operation involved moving the teenager’s tumor and replacing her lower jaw with titanium plates, leaving her appearance immeasurably improved. The experience has left Grace with a burning desire to study medicine.

Kind of puts one’s own problems into perspective…

Map of Europe if All Secessionist Movements Were to Succeed

separatists1.jpg.CROP.original-original

If you want a rough idea of how European borders would have to be redrawn if regions with a separatist agenda got their way, you can look at the map below, put together by the European Free Alliance, to which “40 progressive nationalist, regionalist and autonomous parties throughout the European Union” belong.

Scotland has, of course, been in the news, as has Spain‘s Basque region, but there are a number here I hadn’t been aware of, from Andalusia to an independent Venice.

Halloween Costumes from 1884

costumes

SKELETON. Close-fitting tunic and trousers of black velvet, painted down the front to represent a skeleton. This can be done with Judson’s luminous paint, or with Judson’s glitterine paint. Another way is to cut the shapes in white sayin, and shade them up with crayons. High boots. Large cavalier cloak and hat.

Interestingly, the vast majority of costumes were actually historical costumes including such oddities as Basque peasants, Ethiopians, and some other unbelievably offensive caricatures.
