Chairs Made to Look, Feel, and Smell Like Human Flesh

both pieces

This project is a study of the texture of skin and the shape of the body. I sought to explore the intricate subtleties and varieties of the skin surface and the volume of the flesh.

I selected my model’s preferred aftershave in order to permeate it with pheromones so that I might be able to further prompt a response.

In the production of my final pieces I used silicone as the base element in both pieces. Its visceral quality is instantly evocative of skin and the flexibility of the form means it is perfectly suited to form the organic shapes.

In order for the consumer to use the chair, physical contact must be made and in so doing a connection is formed. I want the user to question their relationship and level of comfort they have in their own skin and with an other.

We know that it is flesh but we cannot ascribe precise body parts to the elements.

About

I design video games for a living, write fiction, political theory and poetry for personal amusement, and train regularly in Western European 16th century swordwork. On frequent occasion I have been known to hunt for and explore abandoned graveyards, train tunnels and other interesting places wherever I may find them, but there is absolutely no truth to the rumor that I am preparing to set off a zombie apocalypse. Nothing that will stand up in court, at least. I use paranthesis with distressing frequency, have a deep passion for history, anthropology and sociological theory, and really, really, really hate mayonnaise. But I wash my hands after the writing. Promise.
