Sphynx Kitten

The Sphynx is a breed of cat known for its lack of a coat.

Lack of coat makes the cat quite warm to the touch. Whiskers and eyebrows may be present, either whole or broken, or may be totally absent. The skin is the color their fur would be, and all the usual cat marking patterns (solid, point, van, tabby, tortie, etc.) may be found on Sphynx skin.

[B]reeders in Europe have been working on the Sphynx breed since the early 1960s.

About

I design video games for a living, write fiction, political theory and poetry for personal amusement, and train regularly in Western European 16th century swordwork. On frequent occasion I have been known to hunt for and explore abandoned graveyards, train tunnels and other interesting places wherever I may find them, but there is absolutely no truth to the rumor that I am preparing to set off a zombie apocalypse. Nothing that will stand up in court, at least. I use paranthesis with distressing frequency, have a deep passion for history, anthropology and sociological theory, and really, really, really hate mayonnaise. But I wash my hands after the writing. Promise.

    • According to Wikipedia, it is “an allele of the same gene that produces the Devon Rex”.

So, basically a random mutation that breeders then leveraged to create this particular breed of hairless cat (there are apparently more than one such breed, something I hadn’t originally known before researching this).

      • Thanks for the explanation! What a strange thing to do though; breed a cat with no hair. But I suppose there are many who prefer this breed or else there would be no sphinx cat.
