Sacramento police say they have arrested a man who threw a spear at a moving car.

Police say a witness called Tuesday night to report a man standing in the road throwing a spear at a passing vehicle, and officers arrested 56-year-old Jeffrey Allen Jones on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

It was not immediately clear what the spear was made of or where it came from.

The spear was found lodged in the vehicle’s fender. No word on the make or model of Jones’ victim.

Bear Breaks Into Knoxville Zoo. That’s Right – Into.

as3

When staff were alerted to reports of a suspected break-in at a US zoo, the last thing they expected to find was a giant bear on the prowl.

The determined grizzly reportedly scaled a 10ft wall at Knoxville Zoo while looking for food, although conflicting reports suggest the bear may have been attempting to free some relatives.

He made it into the zoo’s perimeter before a ranger spotted the intruder and alerted staff. [T]he bear is believed to have climbed back over the fence before zoo staff could get near him.

Apparently the Darwin Awards aren’t just for humans anymore.

Dolphin-Assisted Birth

dnews-files-2013-05-dolphin-assisted-birth-130529-670x440-jpg

The couple planning to do this are entirely serious—and they won’t be the first to travel to Hawaii for a dolphin-assisted birth. My professional opinion: this has to be, hands down, one of the worst natural birthing ideas anyone has ever had.

Because of their friendly disposition and common occurance in aquariums, we tend to think of dolphins as trustworthy, loving creatures. But let’s get real for a minute here. Dolphins don’t eat sunshine and fart roses. They’re wild animals, and they are known to do some pretty terrible things.

And by terrible things, let’s go down the list of what sweet creatures dolphins are, and what they do to other dolphins (and people):

  • Kidnapping
  • Gang rape
  • Attacking and killing baby dolphins for practice
  • Drowning

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not dissing dolphins in any way here. On the contrary, the more I hear about what douchebags dolphins and our closer cousins, chimpanzees are, it just reaffirms the opinion that it really doesn’t matter what kind of animal you are, given the power and opportunity, being an asshat isn’t the sole province of humanity.

So what does the site that is promoting this say?

The Sirius Institute, where the couple is headed, claims that a natural dolphin-assisted birth is completely safe. “Some of the reported occurrences include a mother and a baby playing with the dolphins within 45 minutes of the birth,” claims the site, “another instance of a free dolphin escorting a newborn human baby to the surface for its first breath.”

When Penn and Teller talked to the institute, they found that none of the mothers which came to Sirius actually went through with the ocean birth.

Naturally.

The Giant Blob off the Coast of Cuba

ku-xlarge

On June 20th I received an email: a huge pink blob has been found off the coast of Cuba, and no one can figure out what it is, any ideas?

Roughly 247 aquarium forums, journal articles and poorly-translated Japanese websites later, I had my answer. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the biggest mass of teensy eggs that I have ever seen.

These masses can be up to 1.8 meters long (5’10”), and contain baby diamond-shaped squid (Thysanoteuthis rhombus), which hatch and proceed to peer deep into your soul with their cuteness.

The Community Bookshelf [Central Library Parking Garage] is a striking feature of Kansas City’s downtown.

It runs along the south wall of the Central Library’s parking garage on 10th Street between Wyandotte Street and Baltimore Avenue. The book spines, which measure approximately 25 feet by 9 feet, are made of signboard mylar.

The shelf showcases 22 titles reflecting a wide variety of reading interests as suggested by Kansas City readers and then selected by The Kansas City Public Library Board of Trustees.

So what are the 22 titles they selected?

The Mystery of the Spinning Statue

article-2346758-1A7342DE000005DC-835_634x424

An ancient statue made as an offering to Osiris, the Egyptian god of death, that is currently housed at the Manchester Museum in England has suddenly started spinning inside its closed display case — and no one seems to know why.

A time-lapse video released by the museum shows the 4000-year-old relic of Neb-Senu slowly turning around inside its case without any apparent assistance from the outside world.

Found in a mummy’s tomb some 80 years ago, the statue has been kept encased at the museum ever since.

Onto the technical details: It never spins more than 180 degrees, and it only spins during daylight hours, and only very, very slowly.

Various theories have been raised to explain the time-lapse video evidence, including differential friction or vibration from foot traffic outside.

Or ancient Egyptian statues coming to life because their mummy was destroyed and the spirit needed a place to chill. Like you do.

Riot Erupts After Teachers Enact Measures to Stop Exam Cheating

riot_2595770b

The relatively small city of Zhongxiang in Hubei province has always performed suspiciously well in China’s tough “gaokao” exams, winning a disproportionate number of places at the country’s elite universities.

When students at the No.3 high school in Zhongxiang arrived to sit their exams this month, they were dismayed to find that they would be supervised by 54 randomly selected external invigilators.

By late afternoon, the invigilators were trapped as students pelted the windows with rocks. Outside, more than 2000 people had gathered, smashing cars and chanting: “We want fairness. There is no fairness if you do not let us cheat.”
