Hotel Kakslauttanen is located in the Saariselkä fell area amidst beautiful Lapland scenery in the vicinity of Urho Kekkonen National Park.

In winter we offer a possibility to stay overnight in a traditional snow igloo or a unique futuristic glass igloo, where you can admire the northern lights in a normal room temperature under the glass ceiling.

Phrenological Head from 1850s

Phrenological-Head

Phrenology is a pseudoscience primarily focused on measurements of the human skull, based on the concept that the brain is the organ of the mind, and that certain brain areas have localized, specific functions or modules.

The distinguishing feature of phrenology is the idea that the sizes of brain areas were meaningful and could be inferred by examining the skull of an individual.

Contrary to popular thought, phrenology is not the reading of bumps on the head but determining internal brain mass associated with each organ.

The Neuroscientist Who Can Read Your Mind

brain-teaser-new

Harvard scientist Gabriel Kreiman has already demonstrated he can predict decisions before volunteers become conscious of making them.

Now, Kreiman is taking that experiment a step further. As soon as he sees the telltale brain activity that signals a decision to push the button, he flashes a “stop” sign on a screen in front of the volunteer.

“So far all we have is people saying, ‘That was weird, you read my mind’,” Kreiman says.

Algae Powered Building

biq6

When implemented as a “bio skin” upon the facade of a building, the algal growth speeds up during the warmer months.

This provides a cooling effect for those that reside within, while simultaneously transferring the heat from the sun to hot water systems and other places where warmth is needed.

But, heat and cooling aren’t the sum of the algae’s energy production. When the algae have grown to fill its enclosure, it is harvested and sent to the BIQ House’s technical room. There, the algae is fed into a biomass fuel converter which meets the rest of the building’s energy needs.
