Engineering Student Constructs Magical Rainbow Igloo

Engineering student Daniel Gray, aka daniboi22, constructed this magical ice cavern while on break at his girlfriend Kathleen Starrie’s house in Edmonton. The New Zealander was met by Starrie’s mother, Brigid Burton, who proposed a bit of a challenge for Gray that would entail building an igloo out of colorful ice blocks.

Burton says, “I wanted to keep him occupied, not with my daughter necessarily. I thought, this needs to be something that’s got some meat to it.”

Since October, the protective mother had been collecting countless milk cartons to make the multihued icy building bricks out of water and food coloring for the ambitious project.

Stomach-Pumping Machine Makes Calories Disappear

ht_aspire_mi_130108_wg

A group of inventors, who include the creator of the Segway, has come up with a gadget that lets people eat pretty much what they want and forget about the calories.

Called the AspireAssist device, it works by sucking the food right out of the stomach so that only about a third of the calories are absorbed by the body.

Crothall said that her company hadn’t looked at how weight loss is maintained once the device is removed but was marketing the device for long-term use.

The Tree Houses of the Korowai Tribe

Korowai-tree-house

The Korowai tribe consists of a small society of traditional family ties, hunter gatherers who have been quite popular with the press for their cannibalistic tendencies.

However, what’s most fascinating about the Korowai people is the way they have designed their homes. There are a few reasons why they live up in the trees – to protect themselves from swarming mosquitoes, evil spirits, and of course, troublesome neighbors.

CIA Admits to Using Modern Art as a Cold War Weapon

dekooning_122612_m-400x470

The CIA pushed modern artists like Pollack, Robert Motherwell, Willem de Kooning (whose work Woman V is pictured) and Mark Rothko on what it termed its “long leash” program — meaning it was done all without the artists themselves knowing or actively participating.

The program was initiated early on, as part of a multi-pronged approach to taking down the perceived Communist threat. In the 1950s, the CIA’s International Organizations Division was set up, aimed at promoting anti-Communist cultural projects abroad.

As then-CIA operative Donald Jameson explains:

It was recognized that Abstract Expression- ism was the kind of art that made [Russian] Socialist Realism look even more stylized and more rigid and confined than it was. And that relationship was exploited in some of the exhibitions.

Lazy Frog Takes An Unlikely Ride On a Snail

ay_101445070

This frog obviously was not in a rush as he hitched a free ride across a pond on the shell of a snail.

Photographer Nordin Seruyan captured the unusual pairing in his garden in central Borneo, Indonesia, after spotting the frog jump on to the snail’s back before it slowly slithered around the pond.

“I’ve never seen behaviour like this before. I laughed when I first saw it and then quickly grabbed my camera to picture it.”
