Shi Cheng, The Flooded Lion City of China

Qiandao-lake-2[7]

The valley was flooded in 1959 to create the lake for the Xin’an River Dam project.

At the foot of Wu Shi Mountain (or “Five Lion” Mountain) lies an ancient city known as Shi Cheng (“Lion City”). It was built during the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25 – 200) and was first set up as a county in AD 208.

This city acquired the name “Shi Cheng” from nearby Wu Shi Mountain, which is located just behind the city. At present Shi Cheng remains undisturbed at a depth of 26-40m.

About

I design video games for a living, write fiction, political theory and poetry for personal amusement, and train regularly in Western European 16th century swordwork. On frequent occasion I have been known to hunt for and explore abandoned graveyards, train tunnels and other interesting places wherever I may find them, but there is absolutely no truth to the rumor that I am preparing to set off a zombie apocalypse. Nothing that will stand up in court, at least. I use paranthesis with distressing frequency, have a deep passion for history, anthropology and sociological theory, and really, really, really hate mayonnaise. But I wash my hands after the writing. Promise.
